２１世紀も間近に迫っておりますが，我が国をとりまく国際情勢の変化も著しく，また我が国が世界に果たすべき役割もますます多様かつ重要になっております．すでに，ご存知のごとく，スポーツは世界的な規模で行なわれる現代文化の代表的な領域に成長し，国際政治・経済・生活の諸地域にも影響するようになっております．それは，何よりもスポーツに対する民衆の支持が，国境を越えて広がっているゆえであります．そして，現代はスポーツ外交の時代でもあるといえましょう．すなわち，代表選手による外交から，幅広いスポーツ参加者層による民衆外交の場へと発展しています．

さて，国内の現状をみますと，われわれはいま産業構造の大変化を経験しており，また未曾有の高齢化社会へと向かっております．そこでは，様々なストレスを与える変化への適応が要求されることでありましょう．そしてその変化のストレスを克服して，高齢においてもなおフレキシブルな身体と頭脳を維持し，活躍することが要求されるでありましょう．

２１世紀へかけてこのような国際的・国内的情勢を考えるとき，ゴルフという独自な特性をもったスポーツ文化が，時代の要求に応える豊かな可能性を含んでいることに気づかれることと思います．すなわち，国際的な種目であり，少年から高齢者まで，そして男女ともに参加でき，精神と身体の統合を必要とする種目であること，健康の維持発展に可能性を含んでいることなどでもあります．これらの豊かな可能性を確実な実りとするためには，単なる経験では様々な弊害を生じるでありましょうし，従来の恒例に従っているだけではなく，学問による裏付けが必要であります．そこで諸科学協力しての，ゴルフに関する科学情報の創造発展と交流が必要と考えられます．

幸いにして，我が国には，ゴルフを愛好する研究者や技術者，さらには教養人が数知れずおりますし，また，高学歴社会ゆえに，ゴルフの実力が高くしかも科学を理解する能力を持つ多数の人々がおります．ここには，我が国が世界に先駆けて，ゴルフ学会を設立するに十分な可能性と裏付けがあります．さらには，『日本ゴルフ学会』が核となって，世界的な学問的組織ヘと発展していく可能性もあると確信しております．いまや，人文・社会・自然・天学・教育学その他にわたる開放系の学際科学の焦点として，ゴルフをとりあげるゴルフ学会が提案されるべき時であると考え，多方面にわたるゴルフ愛好者の皆さまのご入会を期待しています．

設立とその後の経緯
学会は，１９８７年１１月２８日に創設されましたが，その後毎年全国大会を開催し，１９９２年には創立５周年を記念して，世界１０か国から研究者の参加を得て国際ゴルフ会議（世界ゴルフフォーラム　'92）を開催し，ゴルフ科学の発展に寄与しています．

The Objectives of Establishing Japan Society of Golf Sciences

As you already know, sports have developed to become one of the areas representing modern culture which involves people on the universal scale and have come to influence other areas of life such as international politics, economy and so on. This is because sports have been supported by the public in general and that is why the sports have spread out beyond the borders.

The present day can be said the day of diplomacy by sports ; the diplomacy by representative athletes in the past have become in our day the diplomacy by the public with athletes participating from a wide variety of fields.

If you look at the present domestic situations, you will notice that Japan is now undergoing drastic changes in the industrial structure and heading towards a historical high-age society. There we will be asked to cope with and adapt to various changes which might cause mental stress. We will also be asked to overcome those pressures of changes and yet remain active in the society with flexible mind and body even at the old age.

At this point when the 21st century is just around the corner, if you take these circumstances, international and domestic, into your consideration you will see that golf, which has sporting culture of its own and possesses rich possibility to meet the needs of the coming era. Namely, golf is an international game, a game in which young and old, or male and female can equally enjoy participating, a game where mind and body should be unified and a game by which wellness can be maintained and developed. In order to make these rich possibilities productive to secure good fruits, mere experiences of the past might invite various ill effects. Academic studies might be necessary to support the customary ways of doing. Thus, scientific information concerning golf should be explored and exchanged with the cooperation of sciences of all kinds.

Fortunately, in this country there are many golf-loving researchers, technical experts and intellectuals. In addition, owing to the high level of educational background of the society, many of those who play golf show high ability in the game and understanding of science. This will prove that Japan can take the initiative in establishing a society of golf ahead of other countries. We believe "Japan Society of Golf Sciences" can be the core to develop to the world-wide academic system. We consider that now is the time to propose the establishment of a golf society which takes up golf as a focus of open inter-disciplinary science, such as humanities, social science, natural science, medicine, education and the like. We sincerely look forward to having many golf-lovers of various fields join us and become a member of Japan Society of Golf Sciences.
